With the season to be merry and eat (A LOT for most of us), we can still maintain that figure and avoid those killer diseases if we will watch what we put inside our mouth. As someone once said, what we eat is what we are. Here is a page from YAHOO where you can find interesting topics on organic living and even food gift suggestions that are quick to prepare.

Planning For the Holidays

Well, it’s that time of year again. We’re all faced with the usual challenge of how to survive the holidays without completely blowing our commitment to healthy eating and living. It can be done - you can be the same size you are now (or even smaller!) on January 1, 2009, if you plan for it to happen!

Here are some of my tried and true strategies for a healthier holiday season:

* Decide in advance when you are going to cheat, and to what degree. And, make sure it’s worth it. You can take in an extra 2000 calories every day just wandering mindlessly by the office candy bowl 12 times per day, or you can wait and have one glorious dessert at a party and really enjoy it.
* Set yourself up for success. Don’t allow your house and office to become storage depots for “bad” foods. They will call your name from the kitchen, closet, or wherever your store them. If you receive a gift of chocolate, cookies, or anything on the forbidden list, have a few pieces and GET RID OF THE REST! There are lots of people out there who can’t get enough of this stuff, so let them have it!
* When you are attending functions, don’t arrive hungry if you know the offerings of healthy food are going to be sparse. Eat before you go, and plan to make the event strictly a social occasion. If you do decide to indulge, have a few morsels, get rid of your plate and move away from the food table. (You can consume a pound of cheese or cookies while mindlessly taking one piece at a time while you are talking to others!)
* Don’t drink alcohol at every opportunity. It’s full of calories, and alcohol tends to make you hungrier. Although we don’t encourage people to give up alcohol, drinking filtered water at most occasions will not only save calories from alcohol consumption, but make you less likely to consume lots of other things you shouldn’t be eating also.
* For family dinners, offer to bring healthy food. That way you’ll be sure to have something to eat, and you may find that people like it (that’s been my experience!). At holiday dinners, fill up on vegetables and salad first, and then consume some of the other offerings. You’re likely to consume less of the calorie-dense stuff that way.
* The day after a holiday event or dinner, get rid of all of the “bad” foods. Again, they will call your name until you finish them. Find a neighbor that would appreciate these foods, or take them to a local church or food bank, but get them out of your house!
* Don’t let up on exercise. When your daily routine changes, it is easy for your exercise routine to change as well. Here’s a suggestion - instead of less exercise, how about planning to do more! Add a workout every week, take an extra yoga class, find something new to try. You may find yourself losing, rather than gaining weight this way!
* Find ways to deal with the increased stress of family members visiting, shopping and more events to attend. How? Exercise is a great way to reduce stress. And, you’ll kill two birds with one stone - you’ll get rid of stress AND you’ll be smaller on January 1!

Before you start objecting, think for a minute about past holiday seasons. If you ended up feeling tired and bloated, you put on weight, your exercise program evaporated and you found yourself starting over again at the beginning of the New Year, the same thing will happen this year UNLESS YOU DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT!

So, take a few minutes and write down your own personal strategy for dealing with the situations you usually find yourself in, and read it every morning before you start your day -it will reinforce your decision and help keep you on track. If you get in trouble call a friend, call our office, send me an email, but don’t give up and fall into your usual pattern!

12 simple ways to supercharge your brain

Sorry I can’t help but share this amazing information again. Thank you Yahoo!!

* by Jay @ Dumb Little Man, on Wed Oct 22, 2008 6:00am PDT

Have you ever felt exasperated when you bumped into someone at the store but absolutely couldn’t remember their name? Sure, it happens to all of us.

Despite being the strongest computer on the planet, our brains do lapse. It’s hard to blame them really. As humans, we spend much of or existence stuffing our brains with stuff.

No matter how powerful our brains are, they need recuperation time to be kept in shape. Think of it as a tune up for your brain. Skipping brain maintenance is as silly as the person wandering the parking garage because they forgot where they parked. Is that you? Are you that person? If so, fear not; we are all that person at some point.

Now I am not a brain surgeon and I am not going to suggest you do anything surgical or dangerous. I am however an astute student of human behavior so I always look for simple ways to super charge my brain.

Here are some things you can begin doing as soon as today to begin the great brain tune up:

Eat Almonds
Almond is believed to improve memory. If a combination of almond oil and milk is taken together before going to bed or after getting up at morning, it strengthens our memory power. Almond milk is prepared by crushing the almonds without the outer cover and adding water and sugar to it.

Drink Apple Juice
Research from the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) indicates that apple juice increases the production of the essential neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain, resulting in an increased memory power.

Sleep well
Research indicates that the long-term memory is consolidated during sleep by replaying the images of the experiences of the day. These repeated playbacks program the subconscious mind to store these images and other related information.

Enjoy simple Pleasures
Stress drains our brainpower. A stress-ridden mind consumes much of our memory resources to leave us with a feeble mind. Make a habit to engage yourself in few simple pleasures everyday to dissolve stress from your mind. Some of these simple pleasures are good for your mind, body and soul.

* Enjoy music you love
* Play with your children
* Appreciate others
* Run few miles a day, bike or swim
* Start a blog
* Take a yoga class or Total Wellness routine

Exercise your mind
Just as physical exercise is essential for a strong body, mental exercise is equally essential for a sharp and agile mind. Have you noticed that children have far superior brainpower than an adult does? Children have playful minds. A playful mind exhibits superior memory power. Engage in some of the activities that require your mind to remain active and playful.

* Play scrabble or crossword puzzle
* Volunteer
* Interact with others
* Start a new hobby such as blogging, reading, painting, bird watching
* Learn new skill or a foreign language

Practice Yoga or Meditation
Yoga or Meditation relives stress. Stress is a known memory buster. With less stress, lower blood pressure, slower respiration, slower metabolism, and released muscle tension follows. All of these factors contribute significantly towards increases in our brainpower.

Reduce Sugar intake
Sugar is a non-food. It’s a form of carbohydrate that offers illusionary energy, only to cause a downhill slump once the initial burst has been worn off. Excess intake of sugar results in neurotic symptoms. Excess sugar is known to cause claustrophobia, memory loss and other neurotic disorders. Eat food without adding sugar. Stay away from sweet drinks or excess consumption of caffeine with sugar.

Eat whole wheat
The whole wheat germs contain lecithin. Lecithin helps ease the problem of the hardening of the arteries, which often impairs brain functioning.

Eat a light meal at night
A heavy meal at night causes tossing and turning and a prolonged emotional stress while at sleep. It’s wise to eat heavy meal during the day when our body is in motion to consume the heavy in-take. Eating a light meal with some fruits allows us to sleep well. A good night sleep strengthens our brainpower.

Develop imagination
Greeks mastered the principle of imagination and association to memorize everything. This technique requires one to develop a vivid and colorful imagination that can be linked to a known object. If you involve all your senses - touching, feeling, smelling, hearing and seeing in the imagination process, you can remember greater details of the event.

Control your temper
Bleached food, excess of starch or excess of white bread can lead to nerve grating effect. This results in a violent and some time depressive behavior. Eat fresh vegetables. Drink lots of water and meditate or practice yoga to relieve these toxic emotions of temper and stressful mood swings.

Take Vitamin B-complex
Vitamin B-complex strengthens memory power. Eat food and vegetables high in Vitamin B-complex. Stay away from the starch food or white bread, which depletes the Vitamin B-complex necessary for a healthy mind.

Sleeping Less: What to Do About It

Another informative aricle I got from YAHOO

Generally, it has been assumed that the need for sleep does not decrease with age, but rather that other factors gradually come to interfere with our ability to sleep through the night.

Older individuals, for instance, are at greater risk not only for developing medical and psychiatric disorders but also for taking medications that can disrupt sleep. In spite of these influences, however, it may be that an actual biological deterioration of the sleep drive might also be playing a role.

A new study published in the journal Current Biology has been able to shed some light on this puzzle of sleep and aging. The researchers, who wanted to determine the maximal sleep capacity of both young and older persons, arranged for groups of younger adults (ages 18 to 32 years) and older adults (ages 60 to 76 years) to lie in bed for 12 hours during the night and for another 4 hours in the afternoon.

The subjects tended to sleep significantly longer at the beginning of the experiment, presumably because they were making up for a sleep debt accrued during their usual daily sleep routines. When the sleep patterns stabilized, however, the younger adults were capable of sleeping for much longer times — an average of 8.9 hours daily — than were the elderly people, who got only 7.4 hours daily. This 1.5-hour difference in maximal sleep capacity is impressive.

If your biological drive for sleep seems to have decreased, make sure that you are following the kinds of routines and behaviors that will give you the best chance of getting as much refreshing sleep as possible. Here are some examples of good sleep hygiene:

* Make sure that you’re going to bed early enough to allow yourself to get an adequate night’s sleep.
* As your bedtime approaches, develop a relaxing routine in the evening — don’t keep busy until the moment before you expect to fall asleep.
* Avoid watching TV in bed.
* Sleep in a cool, relatively dark room.
* Consider going to sleep to the sound of white noise, either from a bedside fan or a machine that generates calming sounds.
* Increase your exercising, but don’t do it so near to bedtime that it gets your adrenaline flowing and keeps you awake.
* Limit your daily intake of caffeinated beverages and avoid them completely after lunchtime.
* Avoid alcoholic beverages.

New kind of Breast Cancer

Please forward to all of the women in your lives . Mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, friends, etc.

In November last year, a rare kind of breast cancer was found. A lady developed a rash on her breast, similar to that of young mothers who are nursing.

Because her mammogram had been clear, the doctor treated her with antibiotics for infections. After 2 rounds, it continued to get worse, so her doctor sent her for another mammogram. This time it showed a mass.

A biopsy found a fast growing malignancy. Chemo was started in order to shrink the growth; then a mastectomy was performed; then a full round of Chemo; then radiation. After about 9 months of intense treatment, she was given a clean bill of health.

She had one year of living each day to its fullest. Then the cancer returned to the liver area. She took 4 treatments and decided that she wanted quality of life, not the after effects of Chemo. She had 5 great months and she planned each detail of the final days. After a few days of needing morphine, she died. She left this message to be delivered to women everywhere:

Women, PLEASE be alert to anything that is not normal, and be persistent in getting help as soon as possible.

Paget’s Disease: This is a rare form of breast cancer, and is on the outside of the breast, on the nipple and aureole It appeared as a rash, which later became a lesion with a crusty outer edge. I would not have ever suspected it to be breast cancer but it was. My nipple never seemed any different to me, but the rash bothered me, so I went to the doctor for that. Sometimes, it itched and was sore, but other than that it didn’t bother me. It was just ugly and a nuisance, and could not be cleared up with all the creams prescribed by my doctor and dermatologist for the dermatitis on my eyes just prior to this outbreak. They seemed a little concerned but did not warn me it could be cancerous.

Now, I suspect not many women out there know a lesion or rash on the nipple or aureole can be breast cancer. (Mine started out as a single red pimple on the aureole. One of the biggest problems with Paget’s disease of the nipple is that the symptoms appear to be harmless. It is frequently thought to be a skin inflammation or infection, leading to unfortunate delays in detection and care.)

What are the symptoms?

1. A persistent redness, oozing, and crusting of your nipple causing it to itch and burn (As I stated, mine did not itch or burn much, and had no oozing I was aware of, but it did have a crust along the outer edge on one side.)

2. A sore on your nipple that will not heal. (Mine was on the aureole area with a whitish thick looking area in center of nipple).

3. Usually only one nipple is effected. How is it diagnosed? Your doctor will do a physical exam and should suggest having a mammogram of both breasts, done immediately. Even though the redness, oozing and crusting closely resemble dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), your doctor should suspect cancer if the sore is only on one breast. Your doctor should order a biopsy of your sore to confirm what is going on.

This message should be taken seriously and passed on to as many of your relatives and friends as possible; it could save someone’s life.

My breast cancer has spread and metastasized to my bones after receiving mega doses of chemotherapy, 28 treatments of radiation and taking Tamaxofin. If this had been diagnosed as breast cancer in the beginning, perhaps it would not have spread…..

TO ALL READERS:

This is sad as women are not aware of Paget’s disease. If, by passing this around on the e-mail, we can make others aware of it and its potential danger, we are helping women everywhere.

Please, if you can, take a moment to forward this message to as many people as possible, especially to your family and friends. It only takes a moment, yet the results could save a life.

Top 10 Eating Tips to Stay Energized All Day

Top 10 Eating Tips to Stay Energized All Day
Posted Wed, Oct 15, 2008, 4:13 pm PDT

Getting through the day can feel like a marathon. Mile 1: Roll out of bed. Mile 2: Feed yourself and everyone else in your house. Mile 3: Get to work on time. It’s like you’ve run 5K, and it’s not even lunch yet! Nutritionist Monique Ryan, MS, RD, the author of Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes, knows the secrets to get through real marathons. I asked her to pass some advice down to us mortals who simply want to stay alert until sundown.

Top 10 Tips to Stay Energized All Day
by Monique Ryan, MS, RD

1. Start the day right. Yes, that means breakfast. Combine a whole grain with fruit, skim dairy, or soy milk, and even add some lean protein to the mix to sustain energy levels throughout the morning. Cooked oatmeal with yogurt and a banana or Lite Mueslix with soy milk and blueberries are good choices.

2. Have a mid-morning snack. Combine a protein and a carbohydrate. It is fine to be hungry mid-morning, so honor your hunger and give your body fuel when it is asking for it. Try yogurt with a peach, low fat string cheese with an apple, or cottage cheese and grapes.

3. Eat lunch on time. Don’t push back lunch until you are ravenous. Instead, eat your mid-day fuel right on time to keep your blood glucose levels nice and steady.

4. Boost your mental energy. Nature’s nutrition for the brain are omega-3 fatty acids. Add light tuna or salmon to your lunchtime food choices, in addition to walnuts, tofu, and canola oil. Healthy fat keep you feeling full for a longer period of time, so add small amounts to meals and snacks. Some good choices include avocado and almonds.

5. Start the day with moderate caffeine levels and keep caffeine intake modest. While it does increase mental energy, too much caffeine may lead to energy highs and then lows, and it can interferes with quality sleep.

6. Limit processed foods high in sugar. Avoid the office candy jar, treats, and vending machine whenever possible. Processed foods do not provide sustained energy and can result in low-energy moments during the day.

7. Consume foods high in folate. Higher levels of blood folate have been associated with faster and better thought processing. Good sources include lentils, chickpeas, black beans, asparagus, broccoli, avocado, and orange juice. Also important are vitamins B6, found in bananas and spinach, and B12, found in lean proteins and skim dairy products.

8. Have an afternoon snack. If dinner is late or if you have an evening workout scheduled, fruits, vegetables, and low-fat yogurt provide energizing carbohydrate.

9. Consume complex carbohydrates that contain fiber. The fiber allows the carbohydrates to be released more slowly, providing sustained energy. Opt for whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, and whole grain cereals.

10. Stay hydrated. About two-thirds of our body is water, and dehydration can contribute to reduced energy levels. About 80% of the fluid we consume comes from the fluids we drink, and the other 20% comes from foods. Always drink when you are thirsty, and have water available during the day to hydrate regularly.

I will share my own tips soon…

Why APPLE is good?

Apples: The Live Longer Fruit
Posted Fri, Sep 19, 2008, 1:13 pm PDT from THIS SITE

Another article on BASIC WEALTH LOSS MISTAKES is HERE

The beginning of autumn means that we’re entering apple season, which will be a time of cider, desserts, and the crisp, wholesome goodness of the fruit freshly picked from your local orchard. Apples have been a staple of healthy eating for many years, and the often-repeated line of an apple a day keeping the doctor away is far from a myth. Apples really do have a wonderful variety of nutritional benefits, and are a tasty addition to any diet of good health and longevity.

Of all of the fruits we eat, apples are the best source of pectin, a natural fiber that has several health benefits. Apples also contain phytochemicals, quercetin, tannins, and antioxidants, all of which have different healthy properties. Below is a list of the top five benefits of making apples a standard part of your daily diet.

1. Apples improve the bowels. Pectin is a source of dietary fiber and a very handy nutrient to have in one’s diet. While it is also found in citrus fruits, plums, and other fruits, apples have the highest concentration of them all. Pectin works to increase the stool’s volume and resistance of fluids and is therefore helpful in treating constipation, diarrhea, and generally improving the health of the bowels. Studies have also found that apple pectin reduces the incidence of colon tumors, and that has been demonstrated to reduce the risk of colon cancer.

2. Apples lower cholesterol. A study on nutrition and heart disease found that eating three apples a day for three months can help you to drop your cholesterol by at least 20 points. How does this happen? Apple pectin, that miraculous source of dietary fiber, helps to draw bad LDL cholesterol out of the system. Not only that, but the antioxidant quercetin that is found in apples inhibits the LDL cholesterol from even accumulating in the body’s bloodstream. When it comes to lowering one’s cholesterol, apples provide a cocktail of nutritional benefits that are hard to pass up.

3. Apples reduce the risk of cancer. Apples do not stop at merely preventing colon cancer. The high amounts of quercetin, other flavonoids, and phytochemicals found in this fruit deliver potent antioxidant activity to all who eat an apple, and with that inhibit the actions of free radicals. In addition, the phytochemicals may act against carcinogens, which will likewise help to prevent cancer. This means that apple eating prevents cancer of the prostate and lung, as well as other parts of the body.

4. Apples slow the aging process. There may have been many generations of explorers that sought the fountain of youth, but all they had to do was fight the daily stresses of life with a tasty apple! The phytochemicals that come from the bright colors you find in the skins of your favorite apple variety, along with aiding the apple’s ability to lower cholesterol and fight cancer, also inhibits the onset of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and other conditions that lead to potentially debilitating situations in old age.

5. Apples help to prevent hair loss. If keeping a full head of hair will help you to age more gracefully, then chow down on some apples. Chinese medicine considers hair loss to be a sign of a depleted kidney essence, and apples are on the list of fruits and vegetables that will help you to restore this essence and nourish the blood that flows to your hair follicles.

I hope you eat your apples, and that you really do keep the doctors away. As always, I encourage you to share your own favorite longevity foods and other tips with me.

May you live long, live strong, and live happy!

Stay Healthy! Health Alert!

Hi Everyone!

This note has long been there in my inbox.

Do you love to eat pork, beef, chicken, junkfoods, canned goods and instand
food? How about coffee, powdered/artificial juices, iced tea and softdrinks?
Well, better think again with the following info:

* Fat is the perfect food or breeding ground for cyst formations. Pork
increases the risk of getting breast cancer. Why? Coz fat raises
estrogen levels, which in turn increases the risk of a cyst formation,
which in turn can cause breast cancer.

* Antiperspirants can lead to breast cancer. That’s because the aluminum
salts and other chemicals clog the pores in the armpits, thus suppressing
sweat. We like to be nice and dry in the armpits, but sweat actually
contains traces of waste material. If we stop them from exiting our pores,
they only clog up in the armpits. And these toxins eventually accumulate in
the breast area (where there’s plenty of fat) and they gradually form into
cysts. Although the majority of those susceptible to breast cancer are
women, 10% of men may also be prone to it.

* Artificial juice is 15% artificial color and 85% sugar!

* Some meat-processing plants put estrogen patches on cows to make them
nice and fat (coz we love soft, fat beef). Estrogen makes meat more tender
because it puts the meat and fat into short, alternate layers (so that the
meat feels tender and juicy when we bite into it).

* Biscuits and soda crackers are good pampalipas-gutom because they’re
high in energy. But a whole can of crackers can be bad because it is also
very high in sodium.

* The human digestive system can only digest and absorb food that is broken
down into its simplest form. But the higher the temperature and pressure
the food is subjected to, the more its chemical structure is altered -
therefore, the less digestible it becomes. We love to put meat in pressure
cookers and to cook them for 45 minutes or longer, particularly in nilagang
baka. But prolonged cooking of meat makes it less digestible, no matter how
soft it may become. The result? It becomes putrified, dead matter in the
intestines. They’re just as good as toxins. And since they don’t get
digested, they just get ’stuck’ in the intestines. That’s why we get
constipated after eating too much meat. Ever wonder what the putrified dead
matter looks like? That’s the smelly, black-spotted (almost mud-like)
poo-poo that we get after drinking herbal slimming teas. Just imagine how
many years we’ve been cooking meat this way, and even more, what our 26-32
feet of intestines may look like today!

* The best way to cook beef is rare to
medium-rare. It’s still in its simple form that way, and therefore can
become digested efficiently. Well done steaks only get turned into toxic,
putrified dead matter in the intestines. But actually, the simplest (and
best) form of food is in its raw form. But since bacteria love to live on
meat, we have to raise its temperature (but just enough to kill the
bacteria).

* So what happens to the putrified matter in our intestines? Fatty acids in
the stomach raises bile acids and enzymes that are necessary to digest
meat. But too much of these acids can cause ‘holes’ (I’m using layman’s
terms) to form in the intestines and lining of the stomach. Since there’s
nothing but toxin in our digestive system, our villi (the short,
finger-like projections that absorb nutrients from food) will also absorb
the toxins - till they reach the bloodstream. And since there’s nothing but
toxin, the blood
will also absorb it. Once these toxins reach the bloodstream = allergies,
skin rashes, asthma, arthritis, sinusitis, hypertension and many more.

* Yup, this goes to show that many of our ailments are problems related to
digestion. By the way, if there’s too much of putrified, dead matter in the
intestines, we won’t be able to absorb efficiently all the nutrients from
the food we eat. That’s why we have to cleanse and detoxify our system from
time to time. And those with good metabolism (i.e. people who can eat a lot
without getting fat) are also those with efficient digestive systems.
That’s because they can quickly absorb the nutrients and release the
energy. So
not eating is not the solution to weight loss. All
we have to do is to make our digestive system perfect. So even if we eat
five times a day or more (as long as they are the right kinds of food), we
won’t gain a single pound.

* Not all overcooked foods become putrified dead matter, meat becomes
putrified, in particular. Overcooked veggies may lose their vitmanins and
minerals, but they still provide us with plenty of fiber, which is very
good for us.

* People who always feel sleepy after eating (like
me, when I eat too much) are those with inefficient digestive systems.
That’s because it takes too much energy to digest the food. To conserve
energy, the body’s energy is therefore concentrated on the digestion.
Either this is the case, or:

* Foods such as pork, beef, chicken, ginisa and oily foods naturally makes
one sleepy coz it takes too much energy to digest them. Steamed veggies and
salads do not require too much energy.

* The most efficient pampagising foods are fruits, and not coffee. Caffeine
only gives a momentary kick of energy, but makes us feel lethargic after a
couple of hours. But fructose (from fruits), on the other hand, gives more
energy and endurance.

* The best form of protection against SARS is simply a healthy lifestyle and a
strong immune system.

* By the way, we need Vitamin C coz it’s the best immune system booster.
But it should be natural Vitamin C. Synthetic Vitamin C’s usually take the
form of 250-500 mg tablets. But at any given time, our bodies can absorb
only 60 mg of Vitamin C’s at a time. Meaning to say, we should take them in
small dosages. So what happens to the synthetic Vitamin C’s? Only 60 mg
gets absorbed by the body. The rest gets stored in the kidneys as
gallstones.

* Sign of being healthy: poo-poo (stool) and discharges (such as menstruation)
should not have any bad (’malansa’) smell.

* Most synthetic drugs are not chilated, i.e. they do not get absorbed by
the body 100%. A large percentage still accumulate in the kidneys, which is
why it’s not good to be dependent on medicine. In this case, one sickness
leads to another. Carl Linnaeus said, & quot; To live by medicine is to live
horribly.& quot; Hippocrates said & quot;Thy food shall be thy medicine.
" Which is why we simply have to eat well to get well.

* Commercial chicken is complete with steroids and antibiotics to make them
fat and resistant to diseases. Unfortunately, they don’t exactly do the
same thing to the eaters.

* “Light” Beer has a higher alcohol content than pale pilsen.

* If a child starts getting fed with too much fried chicken and fast foods
at age 1, chances are, she’ll have irregular menstruation by age 12. At
18-20 years, there’s a large probability that she’ll have breast lumps.

* Fast foods use week-old oils. Recycled oil is simply carcinogenic. And
according to one businessman, these foodchains changed oil every after 14 days!

* Any oil, when heated up, becomes ‘ bad cholesterol’. That’s why it’s not
such a good idea to deep-fry foods in olive oil - it’s just a waste. Better
fry with corn or canola oil because of the lower boiling point compared to
olive oil. But olive oil is very good when taken in its raw form. When
eating fried fish, it is best to soak it first in balsamic vinegar with
olive oil so that the polyunsaturated fats will get converted into
monounsaturated fats.

* If meat is rare or medium-rare, the fats will enter the body as grasa or
in the liquid form. Small amounts of it can even be used as lubrication for
the blood. But if meat is well-done or overcooked, the fats just remain as
plaques, which become the arteries’ worst enemies.

* Kids who eat too much breads, biscuits and starchy foods are more prone
to diabetes and lung diseases later in life, while those who favor junk
foods are susceptible to allergies.

* Too much synthetic drugs can make the
immune system sluggish.

* Diseases are the result of a long-term developing process which begins
early in life and finally leads to saturation of toxins in the body.

* Fiber consumes fat.

* Don’t buy canned foods with even the slightest dents and rust. There’s
something called Cl. Botulism poisoning (which is fatal). It’s a kind of
food poisoning in vacuum-packed foods. Some bacteria are anaerobic (i.e.
they can live without oxygen). Spores can enter the tiny dents in the cans.

* Want to check the purity of honey? If there are ants around the honey,
it’s fake. That’s coz no organisms can live in pure honey. And also dip a
match in honey, and then strike it. If there’s a flame, then the honey is
pure. Because if it doesn’t strike, it means that it contains wateR.

Why first-born children have higher IQs

Does your older brother think he’s cleverer than you? Well, he’s probably right. According to new research due to be published this week in the journal Intelligence, the oldest children in families are likely to have the highest IQs, and the youngest the lowest.

The research is based on more than 1,000 children whose IQ was tested through childhood and adolescence up to the age of 18. The Dutch study shows a birth-order effect on intelligence in each of the tests. Overall, the IQ of the first-born child was higher than the second-born, which, in turn, was greater than that of children who had two or more older siblings.

This is only the latest research to suggest that the order of birth can have a fundamental effect on diverse factors, ranging from the risk of cancer, asthma and eczema, to weight and even premature death.

It can also affect personality, achievement, and career, with first-borns being more academically successful and more likely to win Nobel prizes. However, eldest children are less likely to be radical and pioneering. Charles Darwin, for example, was the fifth child of six.

It has even been suggested that birth order can influence sexual orientation, left or right handedness, and the number of sexual partners someone has in a lifetime.

Exactly why there should be such differences is not clear, and there are a number of theories, with many homing in on environmental influences on the child.

The so-called dilution hypothesis suggests that as family resources, both emotional and physical, as well as economic, are finite, it follows that, as a result, as more children come along, the levels of parental attention and stimulation will drop. Another theory is that the intellectual environment in the family favours the first-born who has, at least for some time, the benefit of individual mentoring

Here are some of the factors that scientists believe may vary with birth order, and why.

INTELLIGENCE

A number of studies have suggested that IQ scores decline with birth order. In the most recent study, at Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, researchers looked at men and women whose IQ had been tested at the ages of 5, 12, and 18.

The results, which show a trend for the oldest to score better than the youngest in each test, confirm the findings of a study at the University of Oslo, involving about 200,000 people. That showed that first-borns had a three-point IQ advantage over the second-born, who was a point ahead of the next in line.

The theory which enjoys the most support is that the extra time and patience that the earlier borns get from their parents, compared with those arriving later, gives them an advantage.

PERSONALITY

This is one of the most researched areas. A study at the University of California (and several other institutions) based on more than 2,000 families from six countries, suggests that the parents’ most favoured child tends to be the last-born. The rebel of the family also tends to be born later that his siblings, but he will not necessarily be the last-born, and rebels tended to feel less close to their parents

First-borns are . . .achievers, who are dominant, religious, conscientious and neurotic. They earn more, are more responsible, anxious and organised, and they stick to the rules.

Middle-borns are . . .rebellious, less religious, impulsive and open to new experiences. They perform worse at school and often procrastinate but act as peacemakers.

Last-borns are . . .agreeable, warm, sociable, extrovert and creative. They are the most favoured child, often a joker and questioning of authority.

BROTHERLY LOVE

One theory of sibling relationships suggests that older siblings invest more time and effort in younger ones than vice versa. To test the theory, researchers at Newcastle University looked at whether first-borns were more likely to keep in touch with their siblings than middle-borns or later-borns, based on a sample of 1,558 people.

First-borns were found to have significantly more frequent face-to-face contact, every week with their siblings than middle-borns or last-borns, even after taking into account geographic distances. Middle-borns and later-borns were less likely to have frequent contact with each other.

MORTALITY

Later-borns are more likely to die prematurely. A study that followed 14,000 boys and girls born between 1915 and 1929 until they died shows that even when birth weight, gestational age, diseases, social class and other factors are taken into account, the youngest born have a higher risk of mortality. “The general tendency was for later-born siblings, particularly girls and women, to demonstrate a higher mortality risk than first-borns,'’ say the researchers from Stockholm University.

One possible explanation is that later-borns are also associated with greater risk-taking.

ECZEMA AND ASTHMA

Eczema and asthma are some of the most common chronic childhood diseases and research has suggested that later-borns have a reduced risk. A study last year by Dr Paolo Matricardi and colleagues in Rome and Napoli, and based on 11,371 young men, showed that the prevalence of eczema and asthma was related to the total number of siblings. The fewer siblings you have, the greater your chance of having asthma or eczema. One theory is that younger children are exposed to a wider range of infections by their older siblings and this helps to educate their immune systems and protect them.

SEXUAL PARTNERS

Later-borns want to enjoy more sexual partners than first-borns. When researchers from Florida Atlantic University questioned fellow college students, they found that those who were the youngest in the family desired more sexual partners, but that the first-borns wanted to have children at an earlier stage than later-born siblings.

That, they claim, suggests that a greater pursuit of a long-term mating strategy by first-borns. The theory is that first-borns uphold the values of their parents, which are more likely to result in having children early, pursing fewer sexual partners and wanting a long-term relationship. Later-borns often play a role of rebels, who pursue different paths.

WEIGHT

Later-borns are less likely to be overweight, according to a study based on 8,000 school children. Researchers at the University of Toyama in Japan found that the risk of being overweight in boys in particular was significantly lower with increasing numbers of elder siblings or a sister. They also found that boys from three-child families had a significantly lower risk of being overweight than only children. Just why is not clear, but one theory discussed by the researchers is that over-protection and overfeeding are probable mechanisms leading to obesity because, they say, mothers are more concerned with persuading children to eat in small families. Another possible mechanism is that there is less food for each child in large families.

Why women in China do not get breast cancer

Why women in China do not get breast cancer
Giving up milk is the key to beating breast cancer
By Prof. Jane Plant, PhD, CBE
(Extracted from ‘Your Life in Your Hands,’ by Professor Jane Plant)

I had no alternative but to die or to try to find a cure for myself. I
am a scientist - surely there was a rational explanation for this
cruel illness that affects one in 12 women in the UK?

I had suffered the loss of one breast, and undergone radiotherapy. I
was now receiving painful chemotherapy, and had been seen by some of
the country’s most eminent specialists. But, deep down, I felt certain
I was facing death. I had a loving husband, a beautiful home and two
young children to care for. I desperately wanted to live.

Fortunately, this desire drove me to unearth the facts, some of which
were known only to a handful of scientists at the time.

Anyone who has come into contact with breast cancer will know that
certain risk factors - such as increasing age, early onset of
womanhood, late onset of menopause and a family history of breast
cancer - are completely out of our control. But there are many risk
factors, which we can control easily.

These ‘controllable’ risk factors readily translate into simple
changes that we can all make in our day-to-day lives to help prevent
or treat breast cancer. My message is that even advanced breast cancer
can be overcome because I have done it.

The first clue to understanding what was promoting my breast cancer
came when my husband Peter, who was also a scientist, arrived back
from working in China while I was being plugged in for a chemotherapy
session.

He had brought with him cards and letters, as well as some amazing
herbal suppositories, sent by my friends and science colleagues in
China.

The suppositories were sent to me as a cure for breast cancer. Despite
the awfulness of the situation, we both had a good belly laugh, and I
remember saying that this was the treatment for breast cancer in
China, then it was little wonder that Chinese women avoided getting
the disease.

Those words echoed in my mind. Why didn’t Chinese women in China get
breast cancer? I had collaborated once with Chinese colleagues on a
study of links between soil chemistry and disease, and I remembered
some of the statistics.

The disease was virtually non-existent throughout the whole country.
Only one in 10,000 women in China will die from it, compared to that
terrible figure of one in 12 in Britain and the even grimmer average
of one in 10 across most Western countries. It is not just a matter of
China being a more rural country, with less urban pollution. In highly
urbanized Hong Kong, the rate rises to 34 women in every 10,000 but
still puts the West to shame.

The Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have similar rates. And
remember, both cities were attacked with nuclear weapons, so in
addition to the usual pollution-related cancers, one would also expect
to find some radiation-related cases, too.

The conclusion we can draw from these statistics strikes you with some
force. If a Western woman were to move to industrialized, irradiated
Hiroshima, she would slash her risk of contracting breast cancer by
half.

Obviously this is absurd. It seemed obvious to me that some lifestyle
factor not related to pollution, urbanization or the environment is
seriously increasing the Western woman’s chance of contracting breast
cancer.

I then discovered that whatever causes the huge differences in breast
cancer rates between oriental and Western countries, it isn’t genetic.

Scientific research showed that when Chinese or Japanese people move
to the West, within one or two generations their rates of breast
cancer approach those of their host community…

The same thing happens when oriental people adopt a completely Western
lifestyle in Hong Kong. In fact, the slang name for breast cancer in
China translates as ‘Rich Woman’s Disease’. This is because, in China,
only the better off can afford to eat what is termed ‘ Hong Kong food’.

The Chinese describe all Western food, including everything from ice
cream and chocolate bars to spaghetti and feta cheese, as ‘ Hong Kong
food’, because of its availability in the former British colony and
its scarcity, in the past, in mainland China…

So it made perfect sense to me that whatever was causing my breast
cancer and the shockingly high incidence in this country generally, it
was almost certainly something to do with our better-off, middle-
class, Western lifestyle.

There is an important point for men here, too. I have observed in my
research that much of the data about prostate cancer leads to similar
conclusions.

According to figures from the World Health Organization, the number of
men contracting prostate cancer in rural Chinais negligible, only 0.5
men in every 100,000. In England, Scotlandand Wales, however, this
figure is 70 times higher. Like breast cancer, it is a middle-class
disease that primarily attacks the wealthier and higher socio-economic
groups ¨C those that can afford to eat rich foods.

I remember saying to my husband, ‘Come on Peter, you have just come
back from China. What is it about the Chinese way of life that is so
different?’

Why don’t they get breast cancer?’

We decided to utilize our joint scientific backgrounds and approach it
logically.

We examined scientific data that pointed us in the general direction
of fats in diets. Researchers had discovered in the 1980s that only
l4% of calories in the average Chinese diet were from fat, compared to
almost 36% in the West.

But the diet I had been living on for years before I contracted breast
cancer was very low in fat and high in fiber. Besides, I knew as a
scientist that fat intake in adults has not been shown to increase
risk for breast cancer in most investigations that have followed large
groups of women for up to a dozen years.

Then one day something rather special happened. Peter and I have
worked together so closely over the years that I am not sure which one
of us first said: ‘The Chinese don’t eat dairy produce!’

It is hard to explain to a non-scientist the sudden mental and
emotional ‘buzz’ you get when you know you have had an important
insight. It’s as if you have had a lot of pieces of a jigsaw in your
mind, and suddenly, in a few seconds, they all fall into place and the
whole picture is clear.

Suddenly I recalled how many Chinese people were physically unable to
tolerate milk, how the Chinese people I had worked with had always
said that milk was only for babies, and how one of my close friends,
who is of Chinese origin, always politely turned down the cheese
course at dinner parties.

I knew of no Chinese people who lived a traditional Chinese life who
ever used cow or other dairy food to feed their babies. The tradition
was to use a wet nurse but never, ever, dairy products.

Culturally, the Chinese find our Western preoccupation with milk and
milk products very strange. I remember entertaining a large delegation
of Chinese scientists shortly after the ending of the Cultural
Revolution in the 1980s.

On advice from the Foreign Office, we had asked the caterer to provide
a pudding that contained a lot of ice cream. After inquiring what the
pudding consisted of, all of the Chinese, including their interpreter,
politely but firmly refused to eat it, and they could not be persuaded
to change their minds.

At the time we were all delighted and ate extra portions!

Milk, I discovered, is one of the most common causes of food
allergies. Over 70% of the world’s population are unable to digest the
milk sugar, lactose, which has led nutritionists to believe that this
is the normal condition for adults, not some sort of deficiency.

Perhaps nature is trying to tell us that we are eating the wrong food.

Before I had breast cancer for the first time, I had eaten a lot of
dairy produce, such as skimmed milk, low-fat cheese and yoghurt. I had
used it as my main source of protein. I also ate cheap but lean minced
beef, which I now realized was probably often ground-up dairy cow.

In order to cope with the chemotherapy I received for my fifth case of
cancer, I had been eating organic yoghurts as a way of helping my
digestive tract to recover and repopulate my gut with ‘good’ bacteria.

Recently, I discovered that way back in 1989 yoghurt had been
implicated in ovarian cancer. Dr Daniel Cramer of HarvardUniversity
studied hundreds of women with ovarian cancer, and had them record in
detail what they normally ate. wish I’d been made aware of his
findings when he had first discovered them.

Following Peter’s and my insight into the Chinese diet, I decided to
give up not just yoghurt but all dairy produce immediately. Cheese,
butter, milk and yoghurt and anything else that contained dairy
produce - it went down the sink or in the rubbish.

It is surprising how many products, including commercial soups,
biscuits and cakes, contain some form of dairy produce. Even many
proprietary brands of margarine marketed as soya, sunflower or olive
oil spreads can contain dairy produce.

I therefore became an avid reader of the small print on food labels.

Up to this point, I had been steadfastly measuring the progress of my
fifth cancerous lump with calipers and plotting the results. Despite
all the encouraging comments and positive feedback from my doctors and
nurses, my own precise observations told me the bitter truth.

My first chemotherapy sessions had produced no effect - the lump was
still the same size.

Then I eliminated dairy products. Within days, the lump started to
shrink.

About two weeks after my second chemotherapy session and one week
after giving up dairy produce, the lump in my neck started to itch.
Then it began to soften and to reduce in size. The line on the graph,
which had shown no change, was now pointing downwards as the tumor
got smaller and smaller.

And, very significantly, I noted that instead of declining
exponentially (a graceful curve) as cancer is meant to do, the
tumor¢s decrease in size was plotted on a straight line heading off
the bottom of the graph, indicating a cure, not suppression (or
remission) of the tumor.

One Saturday afternoon after about six weeks of excluding all dairy
produce from my diet, I practiced an hour of meditation then felt for
what was left of the lump. I couldn’t find it. Yet I was very
experienced at detecting cancerous lumps - I had discovered all five
cancers on my own.. I went downstairs and asked my husband to feel my
neck. He could not find any trace of the lump either.

On the following Thursday I was due to be seen by my cancer specialist
at Charing CrossHospitalin London. He examined me thoroughly,
especially my neck where the tumor had been. He was initially bemused
and then delighted as he said, ‘I cannot find it.’

None of my doctors, it appeared, had expected someone with my type and
stage of cancer (which had clearly spread to the lymph system) to
survive, let alone be so hale and hearty.

My specialist was as overjoyed as I was. When I first discussed my
ideas with him he was understandably skeptical. But I understand that
he now uses maps showing cancer portality in China in his lectures,
and recommends a non-dairy diet to his cancer patients.

I now believe that the link between dairy produce and breast cancer is
similar to the link between smoking and lung cancer.. I believe that
identifying the link between breast cancer and dairy produce, and then
developing a diet specifically targeted at maintaining the health of
my breast and hormone system, cured me.

It was difficult for me, as it may be for you, to accept that a
substance as ‘natural’ as milk might have such ominous health
implications. But I am a living proof that it works and, starting from
tomorrow, I shall reveal the secrets of my revolutionary action plan.

This is a forwarded email from a friend. Stay healthy everyone!

WARN ALL FEMALES E.G. WIVES, DAUGHTERS, GIRL FRIENDS ETC..

Bottled water in your car…..very dangerous, woman!!!!
This is how Sheryl Crow got breast cancer. She was on the Ellen show and
said this same exact thing. This has been identified as the most common
cause of the high levels in breast cancer, especially in Australia

A friend whose mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. The Doctor
told her: women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car.

The doctor said that the heat and the plastic of the bottle have certain
chemicals that can lead to breast cancer. So please be careful and do not
drink bottled water that has been left in a car, and, pass this on to all
the women in your life. This information is the kind we need to know and be
aware and just might save us!!!! The heat causes toxins from the plastic to
leak into the water and they have found these toxins in breast tissue. Use
a stainless steel Canteen or a glass bottle when you can!!!

Why you must sleep early?

This is a forwarded mail from my mailbox. Some health tips that could save lives…

Reasons for sleeping and waking up early :

Evening at 9 - 11pm: is the time for eliminating unnecessary/ toxic chemicals (detoxification) from the antibody system (lymph nodes). This time duration should be spent by relaxing or listening to music. If during this time a housewife is still in an unrelaxed state such as washing the dishes or monitoring children doing their homework, this will have a negative impact on health. Evening at 11pm - 1am: is the detoxification process in the liver, and ideally should be done in a deep s leep state.

Early morning 1 - 3am: detoxification process in the gall, also ideally done in a deep sleep state.

Early morning 3 - 5am: detoxification in the lungs. Therefore there will sometimes be a severe cough for cough sufferers during this time. Since the detoxification process had reached the respiratory tract, there is no need to take cough medicine so as not to interfere with toxin removal process.

Morning 5 - 7am: detoxification in the colon, you should empty your bowel.

Morning 7 - 9am: absorption of nutrients in the small intestine, you should be having breakfast at this time. Breakfast should be earlier, before 6:30am, for those who are sick.

Breakfast before 7:30am is very beneficial to those wanting to stay fit . Those who always skip breakfast, they should change their habits, and it is still better to eat breakfast late until 9 - 10am rather than no meal at all.

Sleeping so late and waking up too late will disrupt the process of removing unnecessary chemicals. Aside from that, midnight to 4:00 am is the time when the bone marrow produces blood. Therefore, have a good sleep and don’t sleep late.

The top five cancer-causing foods are:

1. Hot dogs - Because they are high in nitrates.
The Cancer Prevention Coalition advises that children eat no more than 12 hot dogs a month.
If you can’t live without hot dogs, buy those made without sodium nitrate.

2. Processed meats and bacon
Also high in the same sodium nitrates found in hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats raise the risk of heart disease.
The saturated fat in bacon also contributes to cancer.

3. Doughnuts
Doughnuts are cancer-causing double trouble. First, they are made with white flour, sugar, and hydrogenated oils, then fried at high temperatures.
Doughnuts, says Adams , may be the worst food you can possibly eat to raise your risk of cancer.

4. French fries
Like dough nuts, French fries are made with hydrogenated oils and then fried at high temperatures.
They also contain cancer- causing acryl amides which occur during the frying process.
They should be called cancer fries, not French fries, said Adams .

5. Chips, crackers, and cookies
All are usually made with white flour and sugar. Even the ones whose labels claim to be free of trans-fats generally contain small amounts of trans-fats.

BRAIN DAMAGING HABITS

1. No Breakfast
People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level.
This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.

2. Overeating
It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power.

3. Smoking
It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.

4. High Sugar consumption
Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.

5. Air Pollution
The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.

6. Sleep Deprivation
Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.

7. Head covered while sleeping
Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.

8. Working your brain during illness
Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.

9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts
Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.

10. Talking Rarely
Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain.
———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——-
The main causes of liver damage are:

1. Sleeping too late and waking up too late.
2. Not urinating in the morning.
3. Too much eating.
4. Skipping breakfast.
5. Consuming too much medication.
6. Consuming too much preservatives, additives, food coloring, and artificial sweetener.
7. Consuming unhealthy cooking oil. As much as possible reduce cooking oil use when frying, which includes even the best cooking oils like olive oil.
Do not consume fried foods when you are tired, except if the body is very fit.
8. Consuming overly done foods also add to the burden of liver.
Veggies should be eaten raw or cooked 3-5 parts. Fried veggies should be finished in one sitting, do not store.

We should prevent this without necessarily spending more. We just have to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating habits.
Maintaining good eating habits according to schedule / time and condition are very important for our bodies to absorb the proper nutrients and get rid of unnecessary chemicals.

DO TAKE CARE ABOUT YOUR HEALTH.
AND PLEASE PASS THIS EMAIL ON TO PEOPLE YOU CARE FOR.

Wow, I couldn’t believed the latest ad I saw from Yahoo: www.healthierUS.gov

I’m not American. But I believe that the basic principles of being physically fit is the same, no matter where you live or where you come from. So with so much excitement and hunger to learn something new on healthy lifestyle tips, I hurriedly browsed the site.

The information provided are spectacular! I think it has all what it takes for you to learn basic healthy lifestyle. Although there are some tips which I am not in favor of, like using microwave and pre-cooked or canned foods, and eating meat.

But the rest about vegetables and fruits, I love them! Less the mayonnaise, huh! And because of my "oh-so-vegetarian" conviction, I highly recommend one of the links: www.fruitsandveggiesmatter.gov  It provides useful information about how great it is having fruits and veggies everyday in our diet!

And by the way, here is a summary of the tips mentioned in the  healthierUS site:

            1. Be physically active each day

            2. Eat a nutritious diet

            3. Get preventive screenings

            4. Avoid risky behaviors (such as smoking & drinking liquors)
